Overview
The SN850X is WD's answer to the Samsung 990 Pro, and frankly, they're so close in everyday use that the choice comes down to price and brand preference. I've been running one in my gaming PC for six months. Games load fast, Windows feels snappy, and I haven't had a single issue. The WD Dashboard software lets you turn on "Game Mode 2.0" which supposedly prioritizes game file access — I couldn't tell the difference in my testing, but it doesn't hurt to have it on. What I like: it runs cooler than the competition under load (75°C vs 80°C+ on some PCIe 5.0 drives). What I don't: the 1TB model's write speeds drop noticeably once the SLC cache fills up. For everyday use it's fine, but if you're constantly writing hundreds of gigs, consider the 2TB version. Bottom line: one of the best PCIe 4.0 drives you can buy in 2026. If you find it on sale, grab it.
